The District of Medellín, the Plaza Mayor Convention Centre and the Greater Medellín Convention & Visitors Bureau, in collaboration with SEGITTUR, will play host to the first Ibero-American Congress of Smart Destinations in Medellín (Colombia) from 9 to 11 October 2023.

“We are very happy to share the launch of an activity that we believe is very necessary with Medellín, in the form of the first Ibero-American Congress of Smart Destinations. We are going to address very important issues that globally account for 10% of GDP, create many jobs and generate major growth” asserted the Chairman of SEGITTUR, Enrique Martínez.

“This conference will allow the different companies, tourism service providers, allies and other tourism offices in the country to find solutions in terms of technology, innovation and sustainability to implement in their regions” expressed the Undersecretary for Tourism in Medellín, Ledys López.

Registration will be open at www.congresoiberoamericanodti.com.co

Approximately 800 people are expected to attend the conference, where they will find: academic sessions about aspects of the Smart Destinations model such as sustainability, innovation, accessibility, security and technology, with national and international expert speakers; commercial samples; networking; plenary meeting of the Smart Destinations Network and a scientific seminar with universities including Externado de Colombia, EAFIT, Pontificia Bolivariana, Politécnico Gran Colombiano, Colegio Mayor de Antioquia and High Quality Accreditation.

Furthermore, guests from countries including Brazil, Argentina and Mexico will be in attendance, sharing their experiences and best practices in relation to the consolidation process as Smart Destinations. On behalf of Colombia, the cities of Cali and Bogotá will participate, as they are involved in the process of being consolidated as DTIs, as well as Medellín, Colombia’s Top Tourist Destination.

“Medellín was the first city in Colombia to become a Smart Destination, a certification awarded by SEGITTUR on behalf of the Spanish government. We are here today in Plaza Mayor, one of the most important venues in Latin America, where the First Ibero-American Congress of Smart Destinations will be held. This important event will show attendees the advantages and benefits of becoming smart destinations. We look forward to seeing you here,” said Víctor Hugo Zapata Madrigal, managing director of Plaza Mayor.
